Music is central to our worship at First Church
"Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world" - Martin Luther
Music provides an opportunity for us to come closer to God. The musicians of First Church help to lead the congregation through worship by singing hymns, anthems, and playing a variety of music to the glory of god. Music is a universal language that binds us all in our relationship with Jesus Christ.
Our ensembles regularly lead music every Sunday throughout the program year, including a Chancel Choir, Handbell Choir, and a Brass Choir. Our Sunday School music program also prvides music throughout the program year. During the summer, we enjoy special music as shared by the talented members of our congregation and other community members of all ages and experiences.
First Church is also excited to bring in special musicians and put on special concerts as a part of our First Church ALIVE! Concert Series. If you are interested in sharing your musical talents or getting more information about the music ministries at First Church, please contact the Director of Music Ministries, Zack Richards, at his email below.
Our Chancel Choir is for adult singers who are high school aged and older. From September through May, we sing weekly at the 11am traditional service. We also occasionally have an all male and all female singing for special services and events. All are welcome to join. We rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9
Our Handbell Choir is open to all adults who can hold a bell. We rehearse directly after the 11am service on Sunday afternoons
and perform for different services throughout the program year. Sometimes we perform on our own, and other times with other ensembles here at First Church.
Our Brass Choir is open to all adults high school aged and older that play a brass instrument. We rehearse on Monday evenings from 6:30-7:30.
We perform both on our own and with other ensembles for different services throughout the year and cover a wide variety of genres from Baroque music to jazz!
Sunday School Music
During the program year, all Sunday School students from preschool to 5th grade learn music as a part of their monthly curriculum. The music is centered around the Bible lessons about which the children are already learning. The students sing for the congregation for a handful of special occasions throughout the program year. Sunday School runs from 9:45 to 10:45 every Sunday morning
First Church ALIVE Concert Series
Featuring music from around the church, community, and world, the First Church ALIVE Concert Series started in June of 2015. We hold 4-5 concerts throughout the year including an annual ALIVE! Concert put on by all of our church musicians. From Watoto the African Children’s Choir to the Beech Street Brass Quintet, and everything in between, there’s something for everyone to enjoy! Check back regularly to see what’s coming up!
